Industrial Arts Teacher


My name is H.M. Wyatt Phipps and welcome to Gunnison High Schools Industrial Arts Program, where your student can learn skills and trades applicable in a hands on vocational setting. 
Real world training happens everyday! 
Wyatt Phipps is originally from North Carolina and has lived in Gunnison since 1998. I graduated from East Carolina University with a degree in Anthropology in 1994 and Teachers Education in 1998. I am currently endorsed in Industrial Arts and Social Studies in the State of Colorado and I am also currently working on a Masters of American History from Adams State University. 

Classes offerings through the Industrial Arts program include:
Intro to Woods and Construction - Beginner level of woods that offer an introductory level of tool use, wood identification, safety and potential career options. Projects include tool boxes, pic-nic tables and class favorite -- Individually crafted canoe paddles. 
Drafting - Introductory level of manual drafting where students learn to design their own buildings and turn their applications to a building process where they apply their new design and construction knowledge with hands on skills.
Furniture Making - More advanced level of materials selection, joinery and finish work that require a higher level of focus and craftsmanship.
Power and Energy - Offered every other semester, this class explore the different ways the United States utilizes its many forms of energy. Hands on projects include complete breakdown and reconstruction of 2 HP Briggs and Straton gasoline engine and repair of a variety of small engines. 
Construction - This is a double period class at the end of the school day and is open for Junior and Seniors who have successfully completed the intro level class. This is a Capstone level class where students have built storage sheds, chicken houses and even a Tiny House. This is an intensive level class that works outdoors no matter the weather conditions. Even in below zero temperatures. Learn to read the weather also and be prepared for conditions!
